6 May 2024. Heather and Nicole had a fun week at UBC at the CIEE-UBC workshop on improving forecasts of species range shifts to climate change led by Heather and Jenn Williams (UBC).

8 April 2024. Heather and our artist-in-residence, Valérie Chartrand presented their Art-Science collaboration about insect declines at the SCI_ART symposium at the SAW centre in Ottawa. 
13 March 2024. Congrats to former PhD student Steph Rivest on publishing her final PhD paper!

Key findings:
  • Butterfly communities were surveyed across an urban gradient in Montréal, Quebec, Canada.
  • Urban butterfly communities were homogenized at both the taxonomic and functional levels.
  • At the taxonomic level, urban communities were dominated by a few, highly abundant, non-native species. At the functional level, urban communities included more species with longer flight periods.

1 March 2024. Over reading week, Heather spent time an amazing group of conservation scientists in Conguillío National Park, Chile. As part of the Andina VI workshop, they gathered together to figure out how we can have a bigger impact in society, and involving the climate change and biodiversity crises.

​11 February 2024. A great initiative! The Science Student Association is running a competition for a science student to design a mural for the Biosciences complex on campus related to the theme of "Science and Society". Deadline is Feb 28 2024 to apply. Details here
12 January 2024- We are starting a new phase of our collaboration with Valérie Chartrand, a local visual artist. The first phase of the project is supported by Artengine. Stay tuned!
